Mr. Gambir Singh a retired resident of New Delhi woke up on Tuesday and made a pact with himself that for 24 hours not to be selfish in his driving and always allow others to go first. His wife, Mrs. Silaya Singh has said that Mr. Singh, now 16 hours into his pact, has not been able to leave his colony yet because the cars just keep coming. “My husband is an honourable man and likes to think of others. He has moved around 250 meters altogether today” she said. She expects him to reach the colony gate with his Maruti Alto later this evening, but at rush hour it will be hard for Mr. Singh to leave because he will have to give way to hundreds of cars. Mrs. Singh has had to fill up the petrol tank for him twice and has kept him nourished with regular tea and podkoras.
One neighbour, Mr. Sukvir Sen, thinks Mr. Singh’s idea is noble but ridiculous. “If we don’t think of others we can drive very far and very fast” said Mr. Sena. “I prefer not to stop for anything. The only exception is when I need to urinate, then I just stop anywhere” Mr. Sen noted.
